The Tories, Timid, or True Blue? website is made up of 3 main pages: Home, Explore, and Interpret.

HOME PAGE Select a Hot Spot on the pew map of the Old North Church to read about the four different dilemmas faced by members of the congregation on the eve of the American Revolution. To explore someone’s story further select the Explore link at the bottom of the window.
EXPLORE PAGE This is where you examine and comment on the historical documents that illustrate the dilemma faced by the congregation member/s you selected.
Identifying the Story You Are Exploring At the top left of the page you will find the name of the person whose dilemma you exploring as well as the overarching question that defines his or her dilemma.
Features of the Toolbar Along the top of the Explore page you will find a Toolbar.

On the LEFT are links to resources specific to the dilemma you are exploring.

HOME: Return to the home page to choose a new dilemma.

DILEMMA: Read the narrative description of this person’s dilemma.

QUESTIONS: Read the full list of guiding questions relevant to this person’s dilemma.

INTERPRET: Move to the final page of Tories, Timid, or True Blue? to record your interpretation of how this person faced their dilemma (after you have investigated the documents and considered the questions presented on the Explore page).

On the RIGHT are links the general resources that will help with your exploration of the documents.

Viewing Documents in the Document Viewer In the center of the page is the Document Viewer, surrounded by 18 Document Thumbnail images.

•  Drag and drop any Document Thumbnail from the perimeter into the Document Viewer.

The document title and the date it was created appear at the TOP of the document viewer

•  A set of questions to consider appears that will help guide your exploration of this document to the LEFT of the document viewer.

•   The document thumbnail appears in the CENTER of the workspace. To see a larger, readable version of the document click view large document image and a printable PDF file featuring the document image will open in a separate window. If it is a handwritten document, there will also be the option to select view transcription and a printable PDF file featuring a typed transcription of the document will open in a separate window.

•   The document source or citation appears to the RIGHT of the workspace.

After viewing a document, you may drag and drop another into the workspace to explore its contents. The previously viewed document thumbnail will move into the Viewed Documents box to the bottom right of the workspace. You may drag documents from this box back into the Document Viewer at any time to reexamine its contents

If you would like to save a document and your comment about it, follow the instructions below.
Saving Documents and Your Comments

As you read the document and consider how they relate to this person’s dilemma, you can save a document and your thoughts by selecting the Save this document link to the RIGHT of the Document Viewer workspace.

A new Save Document window will appear, replacing the Document Viewer.

•  The document title and creation date remain at the TOP.

•  The document thumbnail, view large document image link, and (if applicable) view transcription link shift to the LEFT.

•   The document source shift to the CENTER

•  A text box appears on the RIGHT where you may record your comments on how this particular document is useful in determining this person’s response to the dilemma they faced.

When you have finished recording your comments, select Save your comment. Your comment will be saved and the document thumbnail will move into the Saved Documents box at the bottom left of the workspace. You may drag documents from this box back into the Document Viewer at any time to reexamine its contents and edit your comments.

Drawing Conclusions When you have explored all 18 documents and saved your thoughts and comments, select INTERPRET from the Toolbar to move to the final page of Tories, Timid, or True Blue? to record your interpretation of how this person faced their dilemma.
INTERPRET PAGE This is where you pull your thoughts together on the documents you have explored and record your interpretation of how your historical subject responded their dilemma.

The Interpret window features a Document Viewer on the left and a Text Box on the right. Below are both your Saved documents and Viewed documents.

Record Your Interpretation Use the Text Box to record your answer to the overarching question that defines your historical subject’s dilemma. Supporting your interpretation of the historical record with information from the documents that you explored and commented on.
Reexamining Documents and Your Comments You can review the comments you saved and reexamine any of the documents you viewed.

Drag a document thumbnails from below into the Document Viewer.

•   When you drag a document from your Saved Documents into the Document Viewer you can reexamine the document and read the comments that your saved.

•   When you drag a document from the Viewed Documents into the Document Viewer you can reexamine the document, though you will not have any comments to view as you did not record any.
Print and Save Your Interpretation

After you finish composing your interpretation of your historic subject’s response to their dilemma, you can save your comment and print your interpretation.

Select Print your work and a window will open with all of your comments. You can print or save this page to share with others.

RESETTING THE WEBSITE

In order to start a new exploration of the documents on Tories, Timid, or True Blue you will need to reset the website to delete all your comments and move the documents back to the perimeter of the Document Viewer.

To reset the website, find the Clear Work link at the bottom right of the Explore page. You will be asked to confirm that you would like to clear all your work before the website will be reset and all your comments deleted.
