We are excited to announce that as of July 16th, the Old North Church & Historic Site will be open to the public! We’ve been working hard to ensure that we are properly prepared to welcome visitors back to our site in the safest manner possible. We are in compliance with the Phase III guidelines for indoor historic site reopening provided by the city and state. Please see below for more information on our modified visitor experience and our health & safety protocols.

Old North Church & Historic Site Hours : Thursday-Saturday, 10am to 4pm & Sunday, 12pm-4pm; until further notice.

Please Note : The Old North Congregation is following the guidance of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, and has suspended public worship and congregational gatherings at the Church until further notice. However, you can join the Congregation for weekly Worship on their YouTube channel!

Planning Your Visit

Old North has modified the visitor experience in order to adhere to the safety guidelines set by the city and state.

At this time your admission to Old North includes a specialized group experience that invites you into our iconic church to learn more about both the role we played launching the American Revolution and our deeper legacy as one of our nation’s most revered historic sites. During your visit you will be seated in our unique and original box pews, maintaining a safe distance from other visitors, and hear from our dedicated education staff about the founding of the church in 1723, the remarkable events of April 18, 1775, the Longfellow poem that cemented our place in history, and more about the people and stories that have made Old North the icon it is today.

Your admission also includes digital access to interpretive signage and an exclusive online photo gallery to commemorate your visit.

Through this visitor experience and our unique digital content, we invite you to examine and interpret attitudes and events in colonial Boston and connect those reflections to our contemporary moment. We hope  you leave with a greater understanding of the meaning of patriotism, civic engagement, and active citizenship from 1775 to the present.

Visitor Expectations :

  • All visitors will be required to wear face coverings at all times, in all spaces on our site. If a visitor does not have a face covering, they can purchase a reusable one at the ticket booth for $1.00.

  • Visitors are asked to maintain a distance of at least six feet between themselves and other “social distancing units”.

  • For the safety of our visitors and staff, food and drink are prohibited inside the church and public restrooms are closed.

  • Visitors are advised to follow the direction of Old North staff while in the church.

  • Visitors are encouraged to stay home if they or a member of their party are feeling ill.

  • Visitors who refuse to follow these policies will not be admitted, and tickets will not be refunded.

COVID-19 Guidelines for Visitor Safety :

Our Safety Protocols :

See below for our COVID-19 Safety Plan. These policies adhere to the guidelines provided by the city of Boston and Massachusetts.

Cleaning

  • A routine cleaning/sanitizing procedure will be performed following each group (i.e. twice per hour). This includes disinfecting high-touch areas.

  • Deeper cleaning will be performed at opening and closing daily.

  • All public areas will be cleaned routinely throughout the day.

  • Staff will practice proper and thorough hand washing following breaks.

Reporting

  • Staff are encouraged to check their temperature before each shift, and stay home if they have a fever or are feeling ill. Paid sick leave has been extended to all staff.

  • In the event a staff member tests positive for COVID-19, Old North staff will follow the requirements set forth by the city/state.

Physical Distancing

  • Masks will be worn by staff members at all times while on site.

  • All staff and visitors will maintain at least a 6 feet distance between themselves and other “social distancing units”.

  • Physical distance markers will be prominently placed throughout the campus to help visitors navigate our spaces.

  • Traffic flow in the gift shop will be primarily uni-directional. Per Boston safety guidelines the capacity in the gift shop will be 8 individuals (2 staff and 6 patrons) at any time. Patrons will be asked to wait outside when the gift shop is at capacity.

  • Traffic flow in the church will be limited to one group per time slot. Group sizes will be determined by capacity guidelines provided by the city and state. Visitors will be asked to wait outside for their scheduled time slot. Visitors may also enter the gift shop while they wait if it is not at capacity.

  • Plexiglass shields have been placed at the ticket booth, gift shop counter, and lectern inside the church.

For nearly 250 years, Old North has stood as a beacon of bravery, determination, and hope in the face of challenging times. As a result of our four month closure, we face a critical funding shortfall that challenges our ability to continue the programming, visitor experience, and preservation that this national historic site deserves. Please consider making a gift to Old North today to help sustain this valuable and active monument to the resiliency, initiative, and tenacity of the American spirit. When this crisis ends, and we are able to gather together once again,  Old North Church will stand to remind us of our resolve to overcome adversity.
